There are six reasons people leave Wispr Flow, and each one has a different answer. Pick the reason first and the tool picks itself. Written by one of the alternatives, which is why the reason that points at us is fourth and not first.
The short answer
If you are leaving over the subscription, buy VoiceInk or MacWhisper once and stop renting. If you are leaving over the price but not the model, Lispr, Aqua Voice and AI Dictation all rent for about half. If you are leaving because your words go to a server, Spokenly runs local models free forever and Superwhisper goes deepest offline. If you are leaving because it mangles your language, test AI Dictation, Lispr and Sonira. If you wanted dictation and got a product, Apple Dictation is already installed. If you are on Linux, Spokenly is the only one here that ships a build.

Six reasons to leave, six different answers
Every list of Wispr Flow alternatives ranks tools. That is the wrong axis. The tools are not better or worse than each other, they are answers to different complaints, and a tool that fixes the price will not fix the privacy. So this table is sorted by the sentence you would say out loud if somebody asked why you are switching.

Platforms and prices checked on 1 September 2026 against each maker's own site, and unchanged since. Superwhisper's figures are described rather than quoted because their pricing block did not render reliably enough to quote exactly. Lispr publishes no offline mode, so it is absent from the offline row rather than assumed into it. Prices move; the makers are the source, not this page.
02 / What you give up
Three things Wispr Flow does that most of this list does not
A page selling you alternatives owes you the other half. Wispr Flow is the mainstream option for reasons, and switching costs you some of them.
It is on your phone
macOS, Windows, iOS and Android under one account. If you dictate on a phone as well as a laptop, that requirement alone cuts this page down to AI Dictation and Spokenly. Most of the alternatives here are Mac only, or Mac plus one.
It is the polished one
The smaller tools trade polish for price, privacy or focus, and they are usually honest about which. Going from the most-funded product in the category to a one-person app is a real step down in finish, and you should expect it rather than discover it.
Its free tier is generous
2,000 words a week on the desktop app is a genuine amount of writing, and larger than most paid rivals give away. The local tools beat it outright by being free without a limit, but among the hosted ones, Wispr Flow's free tier is one of the better ones.
None of that is an argument to stay. It is the list of things to check before you go, so that switching is a decision and not a surprise.
03 / The fourth reason
We are the answer to one of the six, and only one
Sonira is a hold-to-talk dictation app for the Mac, made by one person. Hold one key, speak, and clean text lands where you were already typing. If you left Wispr Flow over reason four, your language, or reason five, wanting a smaller thing, we are worth an afternoon. If you left over price, privacy or Linux, the rows above point somewhere better and we would rather you went there.
What is narrow on purpose: European and Brazilian Portuguese as two separate standards rather than one entry on a list, sentences that switch language halfway left the way you said them, and reading selected text back aloud, which nothing else on this page does.
What we do not claim: a better speech model. We buy the same managed models the others do, and no speed claim appears anywhere on this site. Your audio goes to a server, exactly like Wispr Flow's does.
Availability: the June build on this site has no Portuguese variant setting. Its cleanup pass preserves the exact words and spelling you speak instead of normalising them, so European forms do survive, but nothing in it actively protects them. The variant-aware pass, and read-aloud, ship in the next public build.

04 / How to leave
How to switch without losing a week to it
Dictation is unusually cheap to leave, and people still make it expensive by installing five tools at once and judging all of them in an afternoon. This takes about a week of ordinary work and gives you an answer you can trust.

Write down the reason in one sentence
Not a list of wants. One sentence, the one you would say to a colleague. The table above turns that sentence into a shortlist of one or two, and everything after this is easier because of it.

Check what you actually lose
Very little, which is the good news. Dictation tools hold no documents, so there is nothing to export. The one thing that does not travel is your custom dictionary of names and jargon, so copy that list out before you cancel anything.

Install one, not four
Comparing tools side by side sounds rigorous and produces noise, because you end up testing your patience rather than the software. Take the top of your shortlist and use it for everything for a week.

Test it on your worst input, not your best
Read a clean paragraph at any of these and they all look excellent. Give it your accent when tired, the proper nouns in your field, and a sentence that changes language halfway. That is where they separate, and it is the only test that predicts how you will feel in a month.

Cancel on the renewal date, not before
Keep Wispr Flow running until the day it would bill you again. A week in, you will either have stopped opening it, which is your answer, or you will have gone back to it, which is also your answer and worth the fifteen dollars to learn.

- Yes, and more than one. Apple Dictation is built into macOS and costs nothing, though it types what you say without rewriting it. Spokenly gives away unlimited local transcription with no account. - Wispr Flow does not offer an offline mode, so this is one of the commonest reasons to leave it. Spokenly, Superwhisper, VoiceInk and MacWhisper all run speech models on your own machine, and Apple Dictation handles many languages on device. Sonira does not: our audio goes to a server, and if that is your reason for leaving, we are not your answer.

- Often no, and we would rather say so than sell you a switch you regret. If it works, if the price is not the issue, and if your language comes out right, staying is a perfectly good decision. The reasons in the table are the ones worth acting on. Mild curiosity is not one of them.
